Situated on 80 acres of meadow and forest, this family compound is architecturally comprised of a unique mix of materials in their natural form to create a home that blends into its natural surrounding and feels part of the earth. An organic and nature-inspired palette carries into the interior with rust-hued walnut and cedar woods and a welcoming mix of earth tones.
Brewing pioneers and climate solution advocates, our clients wanted to build a home for retirement where they could comfortably host family and friends, and where home-cooked meals, specialty beers, and outdoor entertainment were plentiful.
Quality apple plywood in the mudroom and laundry room nods to industrial elements commonly found in our clients' breweries, while pops of vibrant red hardware introduce our client's favorite color. Leather baskets, perfect for tucking away everyday essentials, add another touch of raw material.
Caesarstone counters with a concrete look introduce a durable surface for folding clothes and potting plants. Large Fleetwood windows and doors allow natural light to flow into the smaller space while offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. Just outside, clotheslines fill a windy pocket of the property to air dry clothes for a light energy footprint.
Brass sequin tiles introduce a touch of glamour to the powder room, while dark limewash paint adds subtle texture on either side. A floating concrete sink with walnut vanity maintains a minimal effect. Demonstrating her light footprint ethos, our client repurposed an existing steel mirror that was powder coated black to stand out from the brass tile. A Kurt Stubbins' Stagioni 4 is reflected from the hall for another textural layer.
An etched bronze hood by Shop Floor serves as the focal point within the kitchen while weathered white Clé tile carries to the height of the cabinets and doors to create interest and a horizon for finishes to transition. Warm walnut wood pairs perfectly alongside the kitchen's bronze and lighter maple interiors offer contrast while matching the solid maple butcher block of the island.
Originally a closed off part of the kitchen, the pantry was opened up to create a more concealed place for the refrigerator. Benjamin Moore River Blue adds a fun pop of color while wire baskets with wood bottoms add a rustic feel for storing fresh produce from the property's farm.
A Sun at 6 table with chunky legs adds weight to the center of the room while brown suede chairs with arched backs mimic the nearby Lostine bar stools in shape and evoke a fuller, inviting, and balanced feel. A golden Armadillo rug contrasts the dark concrete floors and creates a more open feeling with its lighter hue resembling the cedar and maple woods. A sprawling arrangement of dogwoods adds a stunning and delicate sense of shape alongside sculptural wood candlesticks.
Board form concrete walls by MAD Architecture frame the view and create a focal point for a found European fireplace. A Croft House sofa in blue-green Maharam fabric adds symmetry alongside a commissioned art piece by local artist Maren Conrad based on her 'Fruition Series: Emerald Destiny'. A custom pillow in jacquard Pierre Frey fabric adds a fun sense of color while its red edges add another pop of our client's favorite color.
An oak coffee table by Mobler Co. adds a grounding warmth while a custom dark grey Woven Designs rug adds tonal texture to the concrete floors for a subdued yet inviting element. A cognac-hued Sergio Rodrigues chair carries over leather material for a sculptural silhouette that fills the space with added character. A beehive hanging from a record player arm artistically represents the couple and their love for music and found art.
Centered alongside the 'Woolly Rock'—a special place said to have been a favorite spot for Mammoths to roam and relax—the primary suite offers picturesque views of the property. A custom cedar bookshelf houses a vast collection of books on one side and offers organized storage on the other, while creating a welcome partition between the suite's entry and bedroom.
A simple palette of blue, brown, and white adds a quiet, nature-inspired feel and keeps the focus on the stunning views. A deep blue rug and playful, dotted Nickey Kehoe bedding creates a tonal play off the concrete floors and pair beautifully with a custom leather headboard in a rich brown hue. The client's vintage rocking chair adds a nostalgic comfort and cozy place to read alongside expansive views.
A bold, oil-rubbed bronze Trueing chain pendant adds a stunning industrial element alongside a concrete trough style sink that introduces a barn-like feel while remaining refined. Bronze shelves add storage space for displaying knick-knacks and reintroduce the raw metal detail from the kitchen.
A skylight above the shower illuminates aqua blue Clé zellige tile to highlight its defining and beautiful imperfections. A thoughtfully centered niche easily allows use by two, while a bench adds space to sit and relax. Floor-to-ceiling windows alongside the bathtub create an outdoor feel, while a playful, blue Schoolhouse runner introduces subtle pattern and texture.
Inspired by a piece of lichen from a nearby tree, vibrant Benjamin Moore Bright Gold paint adds a statement punch of color to the open hallway of the adjoining guest suites. Wrapped completely in the cheerful color, the space provides a fun and delightful surprise for visiting family and friends!
In the guest bedroom, the client's existing bedding introduces warm, earthy tones while a Kantha quilt headboard welcomes a mix of traditional and contemporary style. A vintage chair with a petite, embroidered pug pillow adds a quirky moment and a special nod to the property ranch manager's beloved pup who proudly helps out on the farm.
Perpendicularly placed Clé cement tiles introduce a fun play on blue hues for a relaxing effect in the guest bathroom. A simple mirror, artisan crafted by Minneapolis brother-and-sister duo Bell Manufacturing, keeps the focus on the tile while helping to make the small space feel larger. Playful cream colored Cedar and Moss sconces with a walnut wood base add a refined sculptural detail.
The home’s signature plank style cedar continues to the millwork to maintain consistency with the rest of the home. Leather handles introduce the client’s love of this raw material again in an intentionally subtle way.
Terremoto landscaping creates a tranquil environment at the heart of the home's three compound structures. A modular sofa offers plush seating in a nature-inspired blue hue that relates to the lap pool and nearby Sonoma County coastline.
Inspired by the clients' love for indoor-outdoor living, the hot tub is nestled beneath a large oak tree a short walk from the main house for a deeply nature-immersed experience. The serene environment creates the perfect place to enjoy a beer and relax after a long day of outdoor activities.
