Collaborative Comfortable Presidio

A personally-led remodel of her 1910 carriage house in Presidio Heights inspired our client to reach out to RBD to help bring her vision to life through furniture, styling, and art. A commercial interior designer herself, the effortless collaboration was rooted in a shared vision of the juxtaposition of traditional details with modern and contemporary furniture. The result is a beautiful, timeless, and personal home for a family of four, executed brilliantly to maximize natural light, views, and the transition through the family’s life stages.

The formal living room's existing arched millwork introduces soft curves and ample space for displays of sculptural art. A Nathan Lindberg modular curved sofa fills the space with similarly soft edges and a sumptuous texture, while the custom designed hearth makes the first introduction of the home’s commitment to bold and dramatic marble. Andrew Mills' abstract Hope and Remembrance adds a blend of earthy, muted tones for a subtle and sophisticated pop of varied color.

Inspired by original wainscoting in the dining room, our client carried the paneling into the family room for a warm and inviting detail. Full length linen drapery and roman shades add a neutral softness to existing steel-encased paneled windows, while an oatmeal tweed sofa and earthy green throw pillows create ample space for cozying up for family movie nights.

A pair of cozy and clay toned Arhaus swivel accent chairs and a walnut Sun at Six coffee table add a grounding warmth and a continuation of soft, curved edges, while a custom forest green rug maintains the earth-inspired palette. Ellen Yetvin-Haven’s Elusive Elements and The Treasure pair together for a dose of abstract and expressive color.

The formal dining room was opened up to create an open and more informal living space for frequent gathering. Fond of baking, cooking, and cleaning together, our clients wanted to share their daily household experiences with their children. The open space was reimagined into a dedicated play space for their young children to enjoy close by. A modular dark grey sofa with a single armrest keeps the light-filled space feeling open while a hand-knotted wool rug with a tassel fringe adds an artisanal touch.

A favorite room within the home, the dining room thoughtfully blends a variety of woods for a warm and inviting space. A Max Lamb table with chunky legs pairs alongside modern chairs for a balanced feel, while the Roll & Hill pendant, a must have for the client, adds an artistic geometry above. Sheer linen drapery casts a warm glow into the space. When open, the dining room leads to the deck complete with a built in kitchen, firepit, and cozy seating for relaxed evenings overlooking the bay.

Designed by the client, the kitchen showcases the home's most bold and brilliant use of marble. A stunning slab of Calacatta Paonazzo introduces dramatic charcoal and earthy rust hued veining for a naturally artistic touch. Tambour detailing on the oak base adds texture while counter stools with a natural cane backing introduce a casual yet timeless element. A trio of ivory Allied Maker pendants reintroduces soft curves and adds a subtle sheen to fill the open space above.

The uppermost level's primary suite, redesigned by our client, offers sweeping views overlooking San Francisco. The bedroom's noticeably lower ceilings create an intimate feeling while lime wash walls add a subtle texture for visual interest. Arched storage alcoves recall the existing millwork of the living room and tambour detailing of the kitchen. A white bouclé Paolo Ferrrari accent chair introduces a sculptural shape while the olive-hued sofa, perfect for sinking into, relates to the nearby Presidio Park.

A large Armadillo rug spans the length of the room for an intimate and cozy feel while textured drapery in a similar color offers a subtle yet strong design detail to the space. A custom headboard spanning the width of the room adds an architectural texture and inviting coziness beneath a pair of pencil-drawn female figures offering a personal and intimate touch. Faithful Roots nightstands introduce a welcome touch of warm walnut wood and another dose of bold marble.

Inspired by the timeless beauty of a Turkish hammam, the primary bathroom offers a light-filled oasis filled with soft curves and artisanal textures. A walnut and marble vanity adds an elegant sense of continuity from the bedroom while brass faucets and pendants add a touch of modern glamour. Minimalist arched mirrors mimic the architectural curves of the ceiling, while windows intentionally lack the home's signature black frame for a softer, monochromatic feel to welcome the subtle texture of reeded glass.

An arched glass doorway leads to the bright, light-filled shower and bath. It's sloping ceiling adds a visual interest while characteristically imperfect zellige tile lines the back wall and plays nicely with the imperfect alignment of many surfaces coming together. Blue hand painted terracotta tiles from Tabarka Studio line the shower wall for an artisanal feel alongside brass shower fixtures for a modern sophistication.

Converted from an existing bedroom, the office was redesigned with custom millwork for a lightly academic feel. A rich walnut desk continues the tambour detail in a perpendicular fashion for a subtle continuity, while a beige leather chair adds a sophisticated sense of organic material. A classic Eames accent chair adds a bright and sculptural silhouette to contrast the moody hues.

A charming existing bench alcove, was fitted with a custom Nobilis for Kneedler Fauchere cushion for a playful and surprisingly delightful detail.

A serene space designed solely by the client, the guest room features an earthy neutral palette with punctuating moments of black. Relating to the chairs in the family room, a pair of rounded Lulu & Georgia accent chairs in an earthy forest green add a sculptural element. A dark grey rug adds contrast to the wood floors and a sense of cozy texture with its abstract pattern, while an abstract block print painting by Sofia Shu adds an artistic touch.
